Tune into “The Great Soul Food Cook-Off” on November 20th!

After my first, I was contacted by someone from OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) that “The Great Soul Food Cook-Off” is being promoted on social media and YouTube. So, not as discouraging as I had originally believed. Here’s some more information about the show:

“The Great Soul Food Cook-Off,” the new Oprah Winfrey Network: OWN and Discovery Plus produced show spotlighting dynamic Black Chefs from across the country. For years competition cooking shows have excluded Black chefs and when we rarely see a Black chef, they have often been eliminated early on in the competition. Now, The Great Soul Food Cook-Off is spotlighting eight chefs and they get to cook authentic Black cuisine. 

The Great Soul Food Cook-Off is an arc’d cooking competition that celebrates the contributions from Black cooks and Black cooking traditions that have shaped the backbone of American food. Eight professional chefs from across the country battle through challenges that highlight the past and present of Black food in America, but only one competitor will take home the grand prize of $50,000. This new competition series is a celebration of standout soul food chefs with dreams of winning as bold as the flavors on their plates. 

Meet the Contestants!

The cuisine being spotlighted makes this a special moment for the Black community. Many cooks and chefs from around the globe reference soul food dishes. The judges are Food Network host Kardea Brown, World-Class Chef Eric Adjepong,  and Soul Food staple Melba Wilson of Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem- New York. Additional contestants and judges are below.

“The Great Soul Food Cook-Off” debut on the discovery+ streaming service on Saturday, November 20th. The service is the only place where you can watch what hopefully will be a great show. New episodes will be available every Saturday. Here’s the real bummer: the show is not being promoted. THERE ISN’T EVEN A LINK ON THE DISCOVERY+ WEBSITE! So . . . how is anyone supposed to find the show and watch it?

For example, here are the search results for a show that can only be seen on Discovery+:

I figured that focusing on naked people would get your attention, but discovery+ does what it can to help you out. There are promotional videos, episodes, and personality profiles.

Here’s what happens when I enter “soul food” into the same search engine:

I did a broad search which presumably would pick up “The Great Soul Food Cook-Off.” Unless discovery+ does something drastic, it’s going to be up to us to help the show get an audience and be a success.
