Adrian Miller’s Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecue has been nominated for a 2022 James Beard Award for Reference, History, and Scholarship. “It’s a tremendous honor to make the short list for the James Beard Award,” Miller said. “I’m thrilled for the opportunity revive old stories and tell new stories about the ways African Americans shaped so many barbecue cultures in the United States.
On top of that, the announcement came on the exact one year anniversary of Black Smoke being published. That’s a pretty great gift!” You may see the full list of nominees here.
